Spiritual growth

Faith

Faith in Scripture is trust in God through Christ—receiving his promises, not inventing your own strength or worthiness.

Browse: Gospel Foundations · Spiritual Growth

What is faith? In the Bible, faith is not positive thinking or religious hustle. It is trust—personal reliance on God as he has made himself known, especially in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

What does it mean to trust God? It means taking him at his word: that we are sinners who cannot save ourselves, that Christ lived, died, and rose for us, and that his finished work is received by faith, not earned by merit. How does faith relate to salvation? Salvation is God’s gift; faith is the empty hand that receives it—resting in Christ rather than in oneself.

If you’re struggling to believe

Faith is not pretending to feel certain—it is resting your weight on what God has said and done in Christ.

When belief feels thin, Scripture points you to Christ and his Word, not to your own strength.

Key Scriptures

Start with these passages—each opens in the Bible reader when the reference can be anchored cleanly.

  • Hebrews 11:1

Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

  • Romans 10:17

Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

  • Mark 9:24

    I believe; help my unbelief!

  • James 2:17

Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

  • Galatians 2:20

I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Walk this out

Truth is not only for the mind—it meets you where life is concrete and close.

  • AnxietyWhen your mind won’t quiet down, Scripture speaks to the weight of worry and points you to God’s care, prayer, and peace.
  • FearWhen danger feels near or the future feels unstable, Scripture names fear honestly and points the heart to God’s presence and promises.
  • PrayerPrayer is how believers speak with God: dependence in words, not performance—shaped by Jesus’ teaching and the Spirit’s help.

Big idea

Biblical faith is God-centered trust in Christ and his Word—received as a gift, expressed in repentance and obedience, and sustained by grace.

What Scripture shows

Faith begins with God, not with human confidence

Faith begins with God, not with human confidence. Faith is not inner strength or self-generated certainty. It is a response to God’s truth and faithfulness.

Faith grows through hearing and remembering God’s Word

Faith grows through hearing and remembering God’s Word. Scripture teaches that faith is nourished by truth. It becomes clearer and steadier as the mind is shaped by what God has said.

Faith remains active in uncertainty

Faith remains active in uncertainty. Many of the strongest biblical examples of faith happen in waiting, weakness, and incomplete understanding.
